Why GMRS is the best place to start

๐Ÿ“ป Is GMRS the gateway drug?

Introduction #

It goes without saying that the best radio to use is the one that others around you are using. After-all, you need at least two people to have a conversation. If your group uses CB, then you should use CB, if they use ham radio, you should use ham radio, etc… However, if given the choice, I’d argue that GMRS is the best place to start.

Your options #

The three biggest alternatives to GMRS would be FRS, CB and ham radio. In my opinion, each has drawbacks that might turn groups away from their use.

  • FRS

    • limited range
    • limited power
    • fixed antennas
    • no repeaters
  • CB

    • limited range
    • limited power
    • no repeaters
    • AM-transmitter (poor clarity)
    • expensive
  • Ham radio

    • on paper, best option (more bands, more frequencies, more repeaters, more power)
    • very technical and confusing
    • requires a test, which most normal people don’t want to study for

GMRS #

GMRS is an “upgraded” FRS radio, but with none of the drawbacks (except filling out a license form online).

  • Requires a license, but no studying and no test (just like getting a fishing license)
  • Compatible with FRS radios (this means that anyone can run to the store and pickup a pair of FRS radios for $25 to talk to you)
  • Repeaters available to increase range
  • Detachable antennas to increase range
  • Higher power than FRS
  • Simple to use because it’s channelized (no memorizing frequencies)

GMRS license #

Because there is no test, I applied for my GMRS license and paid the $35 fee. It was very easy, just follow these instructions after you have your FRN (and an optional PO Box) and choose GMRS from the dropdown when applying. I got my callsign via email a day or two after the license.

Conclusion #

I’m not saying that GMRS has the most power, or the most features, or is going to save you in an emergency, but for getting started, I think it’s the best balance of features, power, and convenience for normal people. It’s a great place to get started.
